Rodarte’s Collection for Knoll

Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy spent their winter doing more than supplying Opening Ceremony with $210 sweatshirts; they released a fabric collaboration with Knoll Luxe, mainly focused on draperies.

The fabrics come in eight styles, each named after a famous American author, and each averaging $315 per linear yard. But it’s the Emerson pattern (second image in the gallery above) which joined other Rodarte fabrics chosen to enter the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. The Emerson is made in Germany and comprised of 30% polyester and 70% rayon, for you Fashion and Interior Design nerds (like you and me!) out there.

Rodarte joins Proenza Schouler in producing for Knoll Luxe, and both collections can be purchased [through Nirmada].

What a reply that would be to someone asking about your new draperies: “Yes, aren’t they nice? They’re Rodarte.”

My Visit to Dennis Miller

Today I was lucky enough to spend some time with the wonderful Gerry LeFrancois, who is my rep extraordinaire at the Dennis Miller Showroom here at the NYDC. Gerry spent a lot of time showing me the new products DM is carrying, and what a luscious offering they have!

First off, my fave Jiun Ho, has introduced some lighter-scale pieces perfectly appropriate for smaller Manhattan apartments.

I do have a bone to pick with Jiun, as I’m still not clear on whether or not his manufacturing practices are the least bit sustainable…He’s coming to NYC on 23-September so I’ll be sure to discuss with him then! We did use his St. Cere Chair in a recent project on Central Park West:

DM does have some GREEN alternatives, and are starting to see the need for luxury paired with sustainability. Antoine Proulx has even introduced sustainably harvested wood finishes, and acrylic based lacquers. There’s hope for us yet!

Amazing light fixtures are dispersed throughout the showroom, with pieces from McEwen Lighting Studios, Powell and Bonell, Fuse Lighting, and Broad Beach Design.

The biggest news Gerry let me in on is that Emma Gardner is now the creative director for Wendell Castle! Two of my favorite manufacturers together in a perfect marriage of color and style. So the pieces I brought you from ICFF, are part of their standard offering.

Alpha Workshops tops off DM’s offerings with great designs for an even greater cause. The Alpha Workshops is the only not-for-profit organization in the country that trains and employs people living with HIV/AIDS in the decorative arts. Jamie Drake recently used one of their beautiful wallpapers in the Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse here in NYC:

Finally an Answer for NYC Kitchens

Today, as everyone recovers from the over-indulgence of the New Year’s celebration, we’re recovering some favorites from the past year.

Our go-to furniture and textile manufacturer of ’08 would definitely be Knoll. This year, Knoll celebrated 70 years as the leader in home and office furnishings, and introduced a revolutionary new luxury textile collection called Knoll Luxe. Combining fashion and home furnishings, Knoll called upon fashion designers Proenza Schouler for their Fall ’08 collection.

Using Knoll Studio and systems furniture collections, we created some much needed office space for the RCS Experience Store here in NYC on Madison Ave. Knoll does this in a streamlined and sophisticated way, which doesn’t distract from the retail element, but adds to the sleek, technical feel of the space.

From office to home, Knoll has something for everyone. For a high-profile residential client of ours on Central Park West, we used Knoll’s studio collection to create the minimal and modern, yet comfortable feeling the client was looking for.
