Kati’s interior design philosophy and background:
Kati Curtis brings a sustainable and modern approach to your design. Kati believes that good design is as much about solving problems as it is about creating memorable spaces. Her broad vision offers you modern solutions which are sophisticated, yet appropriate and comfortable. Her wealth of diverse experience includes everything from luxury New York City apartments, to large scale medical facilities.
Kati trained at the Savannah College of Art and Design where she learned the importance of marrying technology with traditional design tools, such as the art of hand sketching. An artist and painter, Kati utilizes both hand drawings and computer renderings to communicate your designs to you.
Before forming Nirmada, Kati worked primarily with architects where she learned the importance of accurate technical documentation and the impact of proper building practices. Her successful career led her from Washington DC, to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and then to New York City where she began her own practice in 2004.
Kati has been featured in such publications as USA Weekend, The Wall Street Journal, and on BobVila.com, and writes almost daily about her personal design experiences on her blog nirmada.com/blog. Kati’s projects have received nationwide recognition including the International Interior Design Association’s Silver Award in 2002 and the Army Corps of Engineers Design award for an adaptive reuse and preservation of the National War College in Washington DC, which had originally been designed by the McKim, Meade and White in 1908.
Kati’s value of giving back to the design community includes teaching Interior Design at Parsons School of Design in New York, volunteering for Design Industry Foundation For Aids, and the Thorn Tree Project in conjunction with Clodagh Cares. I had the pleasure of working with Kati Curtis in early 2008 on a design plan for my condominium in west midtown. Kati had excellent recommendations for furniture, color schemes, wall coverings, and window treatments. unlike other designers I’ve worked with, at my request Kati was willing to incorporate specific pieces of existing furniture and she customized the design to my likes and personality. In addition, she has integrity and met all the timelines for the project. After I implemented many of her suggestions, my visitors oftentimes gush with compliments on the design and frequently will ask where I bought things and if I did it myself. I enthusiastically recommend Kati for residential design.
